Here we are, in a new – something. For years I had a blog, then I got tired of writing in it and shut it down. Now look at me, I’m back. Most of the posts from the old blog are back too, like it or not.
Sony Music, Warner, EMI, Columbia Pictures, et al continue their assault on the Pirate Bay in particular and file sharing in general with a short-sightedness that is awe inspiring. They are obviously confused and frightened, clinging to their 20th century model of thievery and exploitation while the world shifts beneath their feet.
“Yeah, I know we’re supposed to be…I know the human race is supposed to get down on its knees in front of all this new technology and kiss the microchip’s circuits. It don’t impress me all that much. When there ain’t nothing but “You make! You buy! You die!” That’s the motto of America! You …
There is a great forum over at bukowski.net. I have participated in a lot of forums and online groups, and it is unusual to find one that is interesting and informative and not just full of bullshit and posturing. Part of building a good forum is pure luck, but a larger part is a lot …
This is for Tom. I don’t usually do these “tag, you’re it” things, but as it turns out I did it once before, so here we are again. Image number four from the fourth image directory on my computer:
Well, this is pretty cool; youvebeenleftbehind.com. In a nutshell, this guy, Mark Heard, is running a service that will contact your loved ones for you, via email, after the “rapture.” The rapture, in case you didn’t know, is when JESUS comes and takes all the boys and girls who have behaved and eaten their vegetables up to heaven to prance around forever in white robes and watch the rest of us suffer an eternity under the thumb of the beast SATAN (don’t know what that means? Imagine you’re the guy in Apocalypto who’s being chased, only instead of running for a day or two, you have to run forever and the guys who are chasing you keep shooting you with arrows and spears and you’re bleeding and stumbling and you can’t breathe, and all the time this is happening your wife and kids are drowning in a pit full of wet howler monkeys she had to beat to death with a stick, and you can’t get to them to help – I think it’s kind of like that – forever).
Have you ever heard of Dean Cameron? I know, neither had I. Then someone pointed me to a site he runs; spamscamscam.com. When I hit the site I was kind of shocked, since the design and layout is lifted – exactly – from a version of datapimp site that was up for about five years.
The internet never forgets! I can tell you that much for sure. Well, you know, parts of the internet. In the early days of the WWW, all the print articles panted and drooled over the possibilities that such a permanent, freely available archive would offer. No longer would we be bound to those nasty old books and periodicals. Every grain of human knowledge would be a few clicks away (if not via WWW, then grab all the world’s files with gopher!).
I stuck the knife deep into the heart of datapimp.com on Sunday, and killed off my little 8 year old project. 8 years and three months to be exact, but who’s counting. That’s a long time to run an unsuccessful web business. I think we may have set some kind of record. By unsuccessful I …
Carol made a detailed post about a Miranda July reading we saw last night, but I thought I would add my two cents, because that’s just what I do.
Last Friday the layoffs started for the Los Angeles staff at PowWeb. This after Endurance assured and guaranteed me, on several different occasions, that their jobs would be safe through the end of the summer. Just another example of the sterling behavior of the GREATEST HOST ON EARTH. Yeah.
For the second time the company I work for has been sold out from under me, and for the second time the buyer was not another company in the same industry, but rather an investment group. Our 77,000 clients are now being moved over to a company who’s main interest is acquisitions (Endurance International Group), and only seems to be using the web hosting business as a means to get to large amounts of cash.
Well I’m jumping ship. Gave a week’s notice at the old job, so I’ll work this coming Friday there and the following Monday at the new gig. A weekend is much better than the two years I had between jobs last time, so I can’t complain. Two years of unemployment has it’s positive points, but on the downside, abject poverty gets old real fast.
Now that the Bukowski material is all gone from smog there’s probably no one here to read this. Ah, well. Maybe you’ll all show up on the groovy new Bukowski forum, over at https://bukowski.net/forum/ and we’ll get to know each other better.
I used to lend a hand to editing a few articles on wikipedia, but it was such an exercise in futility and frustration that I had to quit.
